A SPRINGER SPANIEL named Ice kept his cool after sparking a rescue operation in Truro when he became impaled on a garden gate.

The drama began after the owner of the 18-month-old dog, Christopher Teague, had left him with his parents while he went on a fishing trip last Tuesday.

Just minutes into his journey he was called back to their home in St Clements Close to find the road blocked by two fire engines.

"Ice was in the garden and had jumped up at the garden gate. My dad was fake rolex working nearby and heard him yelp," said Mr Teague.

"He thought Ice had caught his collar on the gate and called for my mum to bring the scissors to cut him down - but when they got close they saw blood pouring down his neck and realised he had impaled his mouth on a steel swirl on the gate."

The family, unable to release the animal, supported him while they waited for a vet and fire crews to arrive.

Sam Pawson, a vet with the Clifton Villas L oewe Handbags Surgery, struggled to get to the scene as the road leading to the garden was blocked by fire engines and other brigade vehicles.

When he finally reached the dog he found him 'literally hanging by its mouth'.

He sedated the pet so that fire crews, from Camborne and Truro, could cut him free using bolt cutters.

Once Ice was freed the vet pulled out the remaining piece of steel and took the dog to the surgery where he cleaned and stitched the wound.

Mr Pawson said: "I was worried because he was clearly in shock, but after a night recovering in the surgery he woke up and ate a hearty breakfast - he's certainly bounced back," he added.

Mr Teague is also relieved to have Ice back home safe and well.

As for the fence, his father has removed the offending steel scrolls so that Ice can enjoy the garden safely.
